Garden

We really do have a nice backyard at a our new house, but this backyard is going to be a lot of work.  A few weeks ago we went out and cut down the rose bushes and  cleaned up one of the black berry bushes and we filled up 2 big garbage bins. Yikes!

Luckily, the yard is so pretty the hard work is worth it. I was pleasantly surprised to go outside the other day and discovered one of the crab apple trees had blossomed and the flowers were the most vibrant color of pink I have ever seen on a tree.

When we first moved in we were happy to find black berries and strawberries growing in the backyard. However, we wanted to make some additions. In one of the corners of the yard it looked as though there had been a tree there that died. We've been saying it would be nice to put a fruit tree in that spot. When we were at Lowe's and saw that fruit trees were only around $20 we decided to buy a peach tree.   Luckily, the dead tree stump actually turned out to be a dead shrub or bush, so it was much easier to dig up than anticipated to make room for our new peach tree. It's just a very small tree right now so it'll be a few years before we get any good fruit off of it, but it's exciting none the less.

 There was a big area of dirt on the east side of the house that probably use to be a flower garden. That's our guess anyway.  We decided to plant a few raspberry bushes over in that area

Now, we already had a strawberry patch in the backyard, but Greg wanted to add more strawberries since they make excellent ground cover. We added a second strawberry patch. The raspberries are sandwiched between the strawberry patches.

 We also had a big area of dirt on the west side of the house so we decided that would be the spot for our vegetable garden. We planted cantaloupe (I know, not a vegetable), green onions, yellow bell pepper, green bell pepper, jalapeno's, pepperoncini, carrots, sugar snap peas, zucchini, and pickling cucumbers. 

Since we still had pots left from our Garden in the town house, and the vegetable garden plot wasn't huge we decided to plant our tomatoes in the pots. We have cherry tomatoes and roma tomatoes this year.

 We've got a lot of great stuff growing in our yard. I imagine that if it all grows successfully I'm going to be super busy canning jams, pickles and peppers at the end of summer
